When you are playing for the first time, you are advised to go through the Introductory Scenario. Prepare to invest some time while you are still learning how to play. When learning the rules, you might want to stick to the cooperative mode and ignore player versus player combat which can be trickier to master and is best to be left for experienced players.
A: If you have chosen to play the competitive version of the game, yes, they can. In this case, battle works similar to attacking monsters, but attack and block vary slightly. After a big combat, you can leave your opponent wounded or steal precious artifacts from them.
A: You can attack more than one enemy in one battle. Your total attack power has to cover the total armor power of the group of monsters you are attacking, but you can use the same card to take down 2 monsters which you cannot do if you are attacking them separately. Also, when you attack monsters as a group, they share all their resistances. So, if one of them has a specific resistance, they all receive it. Mage Knight lets you do immense things with just a few pieces of card. You need to move with some, but then be ready to start a fight, and block enough damage to be able to fight back and hopefully kill something.
You start off having to wrangle a hand to just about fight off the weakest units in the game. But to do it, you have to spend a lot of time working out exactly how you can tie those cards together, and exactly how those enemies work.
I only recommend it solo or two player. The game does generate stories, too, earthquakes that shatter castle walls. Shields that let you ram through your opponents as you block their strikes. Armies that fall before walls of fire.
